Resume and Career Workshop
Each summer, the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) hosts a multi-sport camp where students in Grades 10–12 take on leadership roles as camp counsellors, guiding and mentoring students in Grades 5–9. These high school students are not only developing teamwork and communication skills — they’re also preparing for part-time jobs and future educational opportunities.
This year, Academic Allies was invited to lead a career readiness workshop focused on resume writing and professional development. During the session, students learned about different types of resumes, how to tailor their experience to various roles, and how to craft engaging cover letters that highlight their unique strengths.
Many students were surprised to discover that even with limited work experience, they could still create a strong, professional resume by focusing on their volunteer work, extracurricular activities, and transferable skills. With guidance from our team, students selected a resume template — or designed their own — and began building personalized resumes they could use immediately.
By the end of the workshop, participants felt more confident in their ability to present themselves professionally and were eager to apply their new skills in real-world job searches. We’re incredibly proud of the effort, enthusiasm, and initiative these young leaders demonstrated. They are well on their way to becoming capable, confident contributors in their communities and future workplaces.
